half human: the origin of the name and the logo

While visually showing a ‘half’ image, the design of the logo tricks our brain to subconsciously completing the words. The idea is often more than what we could see on a paper.

It’s always a challenge to think of a name, a brand or a moniker, especially when you’re trying to create one for yourself. It was in Singapore when this name strikes me when I was working on a branding project for a client. It was a different phase of life I was going through that time after I left the corporate world and starting out independently, again for the second time.

It’s a peculiar discovery that after more than 10 years of experience, the more I’ve gain the more i realise the polar side to realise so much more to be discovered. As philosophical sounding this maybe, it reminds me of the saying that we must always be humble and stay half glass full, resonating with Steve Jobs’ famous quote “stay hungry stay foolish”, hence born the idea of the moniker – half human.

It also coincides with a mix of bag of thoughts I always had, such as the the question of what exactly defines “human”? Is it our physical body? Or is it our thoughts and imagination? Or maybe half of both?

With all these fascinating thoughts and questions, it somehow made this name resonates even more. For the past years I’ve observed that every great projects that I’ve worked on, those that we really spent time questioning and brainstormed openly often shines the brightest. Many of my client’s have even become close friends, as a more opened conversation is achieved, the more effort are put into the idea instead of being held back by unnecessary hesitations.

The idea for the logo came up soon after the name, as I’ve been inspired by minimalist design of late, the first font I wanted to use is in fact Times New Roman as I wanted it to be basic but strong. Simultaneously, the idea of it being slashed and combined just appeared in my head.

There were no other drafts or options, it was an instant ace as I turn on Adobe Illustrator and work on it. And by injecting one of my favorite color – Teal, that carries that Scandinavian vibes of skies and sea, the logo was born.
